Stora
Blåsjön
Stora Blåsjön is
a village in northern Jämtland, beautifully situated along the lake
with the same name, 280 km from Östersund and only 6 km from the
Norwegian border. The village has about 80 permanent inhabitants and
belongs to the parish of Frostviken and the rural district of
Strömsund.
Despite the low
number of permanent inhabitants there is quite a lot going on all
the year round. During the winter sports holidays, Easter and the
whole summer the population is doubled. Tourists from far and near
come to visit the numerous weekend
cottages, in summer as well as in winter.
Around Stora
Blåsjön there is vast wilderness, totally unexploited. Here you can
wander free and easy or you can follow trails that are well marked
out. In the lakes, meres and streams you can fish salmom trout and
char and there are good hunting grounds for elk and grouse.
The village has a
grocer’s store, a petrol station, a kiosk specialized in hunting and
fishing, a restaurant, a hairdresser’s, a second-hand shop, cottages
to let, a ski slope with a lift, snow mobiles to rent, an elk farm
with a café and a little school museum.
Lake Stora Blåsjön
Lake Stora Blåsjön has a depth of 144m. Only two lakes in Sweden are deeper. The enormous quantity of water means great economic values. Therefore the lake was dammed up in the 50s and a power station was built. The water level differs from 422,7 m in spring to 436,0 m in autumn when the lake is filled up (a difference of 13 m).
Stekenjokkgruvan
Strömsund has a common border with Vilhelmina in the north. In
that rural district there were important mining activities going on
between 1976 and 1988. The state owns the ground. Some ore (mainly
copper, zinc and silver) was won by open-cast mining and some at the
depth of 300 m. When the mining period was over great efforts were
made to restore the area.

Vildmarksvägen (The Wilderness Road)
At the end of the 1960s a new road was built from Stora Blåsjön to Klimpfjäll. The main reason for building the road was the future mining. The miners had their homes in Klimpfjäll because it was impossible and still is to keep the road open in winter. The road goes over a bare mountain region above the tree line and has magnificient sceneries to offer. The highest point lies 870 m above sea level.

The road is closed from October 15 until June 6. If the weather permits it may be opened earlier.
